The October 1980 Earthquake Sequence near the New Hebrides

چکیده
Four large earthquakes occurred in 1980 in a seismic gap near the Loyalty Islands in the New Hebrides. At 3:25 UT on October 24 an event with M, = 6.7 initiated the sequence. Three events, M, = 6.7, 7.2, and 6.5, followed on the next day. We investigated this sequence by using the seismicity, first-motion, and wavefonn data and long-period surface waves. The first-motion data constrain one of each pair of nodal planes. With this constraint, inversion of Rayleighand Love-wave spectra at 256 seconds determines the other nodal plane. The mechanisms of all four events are almost pure thrust on a plane dipping about 20 degrees east and striking parallel to the local strike of the New Hebrides trench. The first-day aftershocks indicate an initial rupture zone of about 2,000 km2, which is consistent with the estimated seismic moment of 3 x 1027 dyne-cm.' During the next two days, the aftershock activity expanded to an area of 10,000 to 20,000 km2 in the directions both along and perpendicular to the trench. Within 5 hours after the third and largest event, the initial rupttire zone had become mostly quiescent. Modeling of wa'i'eforms suggests a body-wave moment of between 0.5 and 1.0 x 1027 dyne-cm and a source process time of 11 seconds. This pattern suggests that the initial rupture zone represents a zone of increased strength (i.e. an asperity), and the stress change due to failure of this asperity subsequently migrated outward. During the two-year period before the main event, seismicity in the initial rupture zone was very low except near the point where the first mainshock initiated. A very tight clustering of activity occurred there. This pattern indicates gradual stress concentration near the asperity which finally failed during the mainshock sequence.

Rotavirus in newborn nurseries: negative results from Honolulu and the New Hebrides.
• A survey of 100 newborn infants in 2 newborn nurseries in Honolulu and 36 newborns in a hospital in the New Hebrides failed to reveal rotavirus infection, despite its presence in the surrounding community. Rotavirus infection in the neonatal period appears to be endemic in some nurseries in England and Australia, but absent from others in England, Australia, the U.S., and the New Hebrides. Th...
متن کاملSeismic Data Forecasting: A Sequence Prediction or a Sequence Recognition Task
In this paper, we have tried to predict earthquake events in a cluster of seismic data on pacific ring of fire, using multivariate adaptive regression splines (MARS). The model is employed as either a predictor for a sequence prediction task, or a binary classifier for a sequence recognition problem, which could alternatively help to predict an event. Here, we explain that sequence prediction/r...
متن کاملImprovement of Iranian Seismic Design Code Considering the Near-Fault Effects
Characteristics of ground motions close to the earthquake source can be considerably different from those of far-field motions which should be considered in design process of structures. The current study aimed to present new design response spectra for Iranian seismic design code taking into account the near-fault effects. For this purpose, a new attenuation relation based on the ground motion...

The main goal of preset research is investigate the effects of vertical component of Near-Fault and Far-Field earthquake records on the probability of overtopping induced damage of earth dam due to the reduction of freeboard due to the settlement of dam crest. In this respect 12 different earthquake record are selected. Nonlinear dynamic analysis of earth dam is implemented with FLAC 3D using F...
متن کاملPerformance of industrial facilities and lifelines during the October 23rd, 2011 Van, Turkey Earthquake
Damage to essential facilities (e.g. lifelines and industrial facilities) due to extreme loads may cause remarkable indirect impact as well as direct physical loss. Hence understanding seismic performance of essential facilities is very important in high seismic risk regions. On October 23, 2011 an earthquake of magnitude Mw7.2 occurred in Van province in eastern Turkey. Several damages occurre...
